Quilter's Comfort's Tulsi Basil - Holy Basil, Tulsi and Rama
Tulsi Basil- Holy Basil Rama
I am in the process of transferring host and if you don’t see the web site at any point, know that it is being migrated to the new host and, you know that if necessary, you can contact me.  I am consolidating resources and considering the sale of my top domains.

Grandma’s Traditions was prepared (finally) to go live and in the middle of a transfer, so I will be sharing what info about the MUSTARD CLUB, DISCOUNT BULK ORGANICS, and more.  A new herb I am very excited about, Tulsi Basil, aka Holy Basil information is featured below.  Send me an email if you would like some Holy Basil and I will send you an invoice.

My weird allergies have sometimes been on a wild rampage.  For years they have played games with my scheduling and some ways of being in the world.  Many times, I am playing catch up.  This time they have bounced me to where a friend is launching a crown funding campaign to raise funds for a house that I won’t be allergically responsive to.  If you are interested in that, I’ve just set up a Blog – Aircrete Builds.  https://aircretebuilds.blogspot.com.

I am looking forward to the web being simple again.  I know its not happening.  Everyone is being forced to upgrade to https so that their webs won’t be labeled unsafe!  To satisfy this external push is costing small businesses a more money and a lot of time if they handle their own web services.  I have learned that each hosting service has its own way of doing things.  Some, in recent experience, attempt to thwart your way and others, seemingly recognizing that this is part of the business and have things set up so that transitioning from them is easy.  For that, I even considered staying with them, but can not build the way I want to.

Who knows what beautiful, delicious, sustainable stories we are capable of allowing into being.

My youngest had asked for Holy Basil some months ago, and I kept putting it on a back list.  Fortunately for me, it finally rose to the Order Now list with two varieties among new items for Quilter’s Comforts Certified Organic Discount Bulk Herbs, Every day discount certified organics.  My first bulk box to arrive contained Krishna and Rama Holy Basil, Mugwort and Plantain.  Feet from who know my foot tea in all parts of the earth were softly singing, YEA!!  Re-acquainting myself with Tulsi (I loved that name from the first), I hope to remember its properties with ease.  I am impressed with this adaptogen normalizing abilities, and hope that they may hold some answers to relieving various stress conditions and relief to my environmental/chemical allergy.  I am every hopeful.  I did not purchase any Vana, wild bush basil (Ocimum gratissimum) and will do so in the future; but make note here Do not use Vana during pregnancy.

We all live in a nerve pushing world of over stimulation.  Most folks have experienced some life scenarios that pushed major adrenaline buttons, and from that end, early in my journey, tulsi was enlisted as an herbal ally.  It was the beginning of the 1980’s, I lived on a bank off of a real Plum Creek, had goats and chickens, and grew an amazing garden that included Holy Basil, Tulsi!  I lost sight of it for quite a while.  Now my attention has returned thanks to the persistent asking of one of my lovely daughter, and her knowing use of Tulsi because of gifts from her partner’s mother.

HOLY BASIL in general often refers to either, Krishna or Rama (Ocimum tenuiflorum /Ocimum sanctum (tulsi) interchangeably.  It is a member of the mint family and well grounded in the ancient Ayurvedic Medicine system.  Krishna has the highest concentrations of adaptogenic triterpenoic acids which enhance the body's natural response to physical and emotional stress.  Rama has significant amounts as well.  Holy Basil is known for its ability to fight free radicals and promote a general sense of calm and well-being.

Tulsi is a powerful corticosteroid modulator, reducing stress from (adrenal) hormones moving about the body and assists in the normalization of cortisol making it an ideal aid in our hyper-stimulated digital culture.  It lowers stress in loud environments, and has been found to be useful in cases of social anxiety; an aid to those with sleep problems, forgetfulness and exhaustion.  According to the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, holy basil has antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties.

It is considered to be a prophylactic and known as a life-extending substance.  Research is also showing it to be a modifier in glucose regulation; it is anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and an immune system modulator.  This diuretic is considered quite safe to use.  It has had a long history of successfully treating fever.

Holy Basil contains ursolic acid, a carboxylic acid present in a wide variety of plants in the form of a free acid or an aglycone of triterpene saponines. Ursolic acid blocks the inflammatory enzymes cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, inhibits tumors (through the inhibition of MMP-2 and 9). It has been used to treat photoaged skin because it inhibits the appearance of wrinkles and age spots by restoring the skin’s collagen bundle structures and elasticity.  C. Cardenas, A. R. Quesada, and M. A. Medina, “Effects of ursolic acid on different steps of the angiogenic process,” Consume a cup of tulsi tea daily gives you the benefits of the phytonutrients in Holy basil.  These help make it is an excellent antibiotic, germicidal, fungicidal, and disinfectant agent and effective protector of our body from all sorts of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections curing internal and external disorders of the skin without any side effects.

Holy basil promotes eye health, is anti catarrh, it has been found to aid in normalizing blood pressure, it nourishes the cardiovascular system and inhibits platelet aggregation/ profound antiatherogenic!  Research by N. Singh, P. Verma, B. R. Pandey, M. Bhalla on Therapeutic Potential of Ocimum sanctum in Prevention and Treatment of Cancer and Exposure to Radiation shows it be an Anticancer and antioxidant offering important protection against radiation and chemotherapy poisoning and can heal damages from treatment induced damage.  It is also been used in recent study successfully to treat anxiety disorders.

Ocimum Basilicum, Tulsi can be used fresh as you do other culinary basils.  Our Southeast Asian native has respectable amounts of vitamin A and C, calcium, zinc, iron and chlorophyll. It enhances metabolism.  When used as a mouth rinse it is beneficial for dental health, helps treat bad breath and because of its powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious properties make it a strong treatment for all gum disease according to J. Kukreja and V. Dodwad in Herbal Mouthwashes—A Gift of Nature.  I read that every Indiana home had this plant because of its usefulness.  I can understand why!

Both Rama and Krishna are pleasant to sip with woodsy, earthy notes; Rama being of a little mellower and cooler flavor.  Quilter’s Comfort’s Holy Basils are certified organic unless wild-crafted or stated locally sourced.

As we are each unique chemical bodies with different chemical response mechanisms, we always recommended that with any new herb, begin with small doses until you are sure that your body and mind are having a positive experience.  If you have questions, contact an Herbalist, Naturopath, or other wellness provider for advice and of course, it is very important for you to do your own research.  Remember, Holy Basil may modify glucose regulation.  I advocate using your local library and book store collections and reputable resources to know more.  You can find a lot of useful information about health and wellness on the National Institutes of Health’s Website.  Check this out - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4296439/

In Vibrational Medicine Holy Basil is a powerful bio-energetic field harmonizer restoring and balancing the subtle electromagnetic fields generated by the mind and body.  Tulsi is considered to be one of a handful of unique herbs that can balance the chakras (the vibrational energy centers of the body). It is beneficial during times of grief.  This plant is directly associated with Lakshmi, Hindu goddess of wealth, love, and prosperity.  Don’t be surprised if you experience some mental and emotional catharsis after sipping your cup of Tulsi. It is an intense healing plant. It seeks to facilitate clearing out old, stuck energy and emotions that are hindering your health and well-being and restoring systemic (mind, body, spirit) order.

Resources                                                                                                  If you are a gardener, you might consider growing your own Holy Basil.  It is cultivated as you would any other type of basil and does well in containers.  Wherever you plant your tulsi, it needs at least six hours of sunlight daily.  When you are planting in the ground, puts at least 15 inches between plants. Water as needed, but don’t over water.  Pinching growing points back will allow your plant to bush out.  As leaves mature, pick to encourage more leaf growth.  The herbal qualities and nutritional benefits are best when gathered for drying before  flowering.

"Tulsi is said to penetrate the deep tissues, dry tissue secretions and normalize kapha and vata. Daily consumption of tulsi is said to prevent disease, promote general health, wellbeing and longevity and assist in dealing with the stresses of daily life. Tulsi is also credited with giving luster to the complexion, sweetness to the voice and fostering beauty, intelligence, stamina and a calm emotional disposition.”  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4296439/
