Mango Tart Fruit Flight

Here is the recipe for Mango Tart Fruit Flight Jam I posted recently to @localfoodbloomington on Instagram.  The picture above shows the jam on French Toast made using one of the Ezekial Breads, local eggs and half and half (I was out of my usual Almond or Coconut milks).  I don't recall whichEzekial bread, maybe sesame  with fresh organic blueberries!

A couple of days ago after experiencing a 100% buckwheat pancake at a friends, I decided to experiment at home to see if I too could have fluffy buckwheat pancakes without the addition of any wheat flours.  I mixed up a batch of organic buckwheat blueberry pancakes using a blend of  organic buckwheat with some brown rice, rye flours, a few tablespoons of my sourdough starter, and the blueberries.  I added a little cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, ginger, and coriander into the mixture to add  additional subtle flavors.

I topped the pancakes with  organic butter and three different Quilter's Comfort/Grandma jam/jellies.  A smear of Papaya Butter maded with local honey(you know that even using different local honeys will give slightly different taste), Red Bud Flower Jelly and Mango Tart Fruit Flight Jam!  Oh my!  Try something like this!  Flavor to flavor to flavor, really switches things up just a little bit.  I really enjoyed the additional playfulness with my food.

I made one of the blueberry buckwheat pancakes and cooked until mostly done.  Plated it, cooled, covered and transported to a friend who refrigerated it over night, heated it for breakfast.  I received a note saying "I made organic blueberry syrup for pancake & added fresh strawberries.  Oh my gosh!  Delicious!  Thank you so much!"  I had Mango Tart Fruit Flight jam for her, but forgot to leave it.

Mango Tart Fruit Flight

-1 bottle of Bell's Larry's Passion Fruit Flight
-2 limes (organic) for their juice
-1 cup filtered water (steep herbs in heated water)
-6 teaspoons of Quilter's Chamomile  HipHop (it adds a additional depth for your mouth to explore)
-a pinch of organic rose petals
-1 fresh mango (peeled and cut unto small chunks)\
-3 cups of  sugar (organic)
-2/3 cups pectin (I think that may be about 2 boxes)

Follow the Instructions for  jam making  inside the pectin box or from a favored recipe book.

Makes aproximalely 12 - 4 oz canning jars plus

There is but one thing that I would do differently, if that; it would be to use honey in the making.

If I have the opportunity, next spring, I will make a new small batch and test out the honey idea.

Life is a mystery, and you never know what adventures lay before you!

In my experience, and I have been making beer jellies/jams almost ten years; you have to tweak every beer recipe.  Yes, tweak beer by beer to find just the right ingredient balance of flavors.  Each beer has its only story, and you only have a glimpse of it based on the senses you bring to your tasting.

Allow your life to take flight!
Enjoy and find love in the moment!

Blueberry Lemon Whole Wheat Sourdough Pound Cake with Rose Petals

I picked up my copy of  The New York Times Natural Foods Cookbook by Jean Hewitt at some point in the late 1970's while living in Tucson, Arizona.  It joined the shelf beside a little bread book from a Safeway store checkout display, and the first cookbook I had purchased after moving away from home, Betty Crocker.  That was in 1974.   Here it is 2019, and I am still baking my favorite cake recipe from the Natural Foods Cookbook, Whole Wheat Poundcake.  Through the years, I have played with this recipe, often adding different inclusions like nuts, chips, seeds, homemade jams and jellies, chocolate chips, carob chips and using a variety of grains (this one has brown rice flour and buckwheat).

Organic Blueberry Lemon Whole Wheat Sourdough with Rose Petals is my latest bit of play with this recipe.  For this experiment I included my wholegrain sourdoughstarter (whole wheat, brown rice, buckwheat and rye) in making a half batch of the recipe.  In this half recipe, I used 2 eggs, ½ cup of sourdough starter, ¾ cup almond milk, 1 tablespoon of rose petal sugar, (organic cane sugar with organic red rose petals – these have been infused for more than a year so the sugar is very full of the rose scent), 1 table spoon Chia seed and 1 tablespoon of crushed red rose petals. Using two baby bundt pans, I filled each with half of a regular quantity of batter and 2 mini bundt pans filled as I normally would. Each of these was cut horizontally and spread with Quilter’s Comfort’s Blueberry Lemon Jam. The mini bundt had their holes filled with the jam. Icing was made using cream cheese blended with the Blueberry Lemon jam and liberally applied. The jam was very chunky with blueberries, so the icing is pretty fruity lumpy. Yum.

This cake may appear dense looking, but it is light and melts in the mouth!  Because I am playing with the inclusions, the next time I bake this, I will reduce the almond milk, leave out the chia, and as usual change up on the jellies. Perhaps next time, I will use Quilter’s Comfort’s Rosehip Cranberry Jam, or really go out there with a Mango Rose Chutney! I will make these changes and watch how they are reflected in the whole grain texture.

Note:  Please only use organic roses in cooking to avoid pesticide poisoning.

Enjoy my twist on the poundcake with a steaming cup of Quilter’s Comfort’s I LOVE Me tea! May these teas hold the intention to support your self love in healthy ways. May the vibrational intention of I LOVE Me be with you in every sip!

Much love in all,

Patricia

~Ask your local stores not to carry trademarked Fire Cider!
Thankfully,  many stores have opted to stop selling trademarked Fire Cider.  Stores who have continued to sell  the Shire City Brand usually state that they want their costumers to have the freedom of choice, but there’s NO choice when there’s only one brand allowed to be sold.  Thanks to Park Slope Co-op in NYC for supporting the boycott!  TO - Rosemary's FREE FIRE CIDER web.

Fast Turtle, Update

Regardless of what I say, I am always going to have a wonky presentation here.  I'd thought I would have published the Tasty Little Nightshades Article.  As they say life happens, not to mention life happens to tech and I think that as I write this, I've just completed a boomarang move in hosting services .  Updates for the Quilter's Comfort website for the New Year, are now being published.  Because of the amount of time working with cyberspace, it has prevented work in the real world, such as packaging of my products.

*Quilter's Comfort is active on Instagram @quilterscomfort, https://instagram.com/quilterscomfort
I enjoy the pace of this social media platform and the new "friends" I am making.    I am also on Instagram @patriciaccolemanart, https://instagram.com/patriciaccolemanart.  Visit me there to see a few pictures and Quilter's Comfort's IGTV.

QUILTER’S COMFORT BULKS UP!

QUILTER’S COMFORT BULKS UP
WITH DISCOUNT CERTIFIED ORGANIC BULK HERBS!

There is a lot going on with Quilter’s Comfort and me.  Bulk herbs at 5% bulk discount every day, MUSTARD CLUB, Dome home building

Quilter's Comfort's Tulsi Basil - Holy Basil, Tulsi and Rama
Tulsi Basil- Holy Basil Rama
I am in the process of transferring host and if you don’t see the web site at any point, know that it is being migrated to the new host and, you know that if necessary, you can contact me.  I am consolidating resources and considering the sale of my top domains.

Grandma’s Traditions was prepared (finally) to go live and in the middle of a transfer, so I will be sharing what info about the MUSTARD CLUB, DISCOUNT BULK ORGANICS, and more.  A new herb I am very excited about, Tulsi Basil, aka Holy Basil information is featured below.  Send me an email if you would like some Holy Basil and I will send you an invoice.

My weird allergies have sometimes been on a wild rampage.  For years they have played games with my scheduling and some ways of being in the world.  Many times, I am playing catch up.  This time they have bounced me to where a friend is launching a crown funding campaign to raise funds for a house that I won’t be allergically responsive to.  If you are interested in that, I’ve just set up a Blog – Aircrete Builds.  https://aircretebuilds.blogspot.com.

I am looking forward to the web being simple again.  I know its not happening.  Everyone is being forced to upgrade to https so that their webs won’t be labeled unsafe!  To satisfy this external push is costing small businesses a more money and a lot of time if they handle their own web services.  I have learned that each hosting service has its own way of doing things.  Some, in recent experience, attempt to thwart your way and others, seemingly recognizing that this is part of the business and have things set up so that transitioning from them is easy.  For that, I even considered staying with them, but can not build the way I want to.

SALE - Quilter’s Comfort has certified organic Krishna and Rama Holy Basil Herb!
Who knows what beautiful, delicious, sustainable stories we are capable of allowing into being.

Quilter’s Comfort introduces EVERYDAY discount certified organics (5% off retail every day) and Grandma’s Mustard Club members getting 10%-15% (sometimes more!) off all products available to the club, including Quilter’s Comfort, Grandma, other Grandmas and a few Grandpa Makers.

My youngest had asked for Holy Basil some months ago, and I kept putting it on a back list.  Fortunately for me, it finally rose to the Order Now list with two varieties among new items for Quilter’s Comforts Certified Organic Discount Bulk Herbs, Every day discount certified organics.  My first bulk box to arrive contained Krishna and Rama Holy Basil, Mugwort and Plantain.  Feet from who know my foot tea in all parts of the earth were softly singing, YEA!!  Re-acquainting myself with Tulsi (I loved that name from the first), I hope to remember its properties with ease.  I am impressed with this adaptogen normalizing abilities, and hope that they may hold some answers to relieving various stress conditions and relief to my environmental/chemical allergy.  I am every hopeful.  I did not purchase any Vana, wild bush basil (Ocimum gratissimum) and will do so in the future; but make note here Do not use Vana during pregnancy.

We all live in a nerve pushing world of over stimulation.  Most folks have experienced some life scenarios that pushed major adrenaline buttons, and from that end, early in my journey, tulsi was enlisted as an herbal ally.  It was the beginning of the 1980’s, I lived on a bank off of a real Plum Creek, had goats and chickens, and grew an amazing garden that included Holy Basil, Tulsi!  I lost sight of it for quite a while.  Now my attention has returned thanks to the persistent asking of one of my lovely daughter, and her knowing use of Tulsi because of gifts from her partner’s mother.

Tulsi Basil - Holy Basil Plant, Wikipedia

HOLY BASIL in general often refers to either, Krishna or Rama (Ocimum tenuiflorum /Ocimum sanctum (tulsi) interchangeably.  It is a member of the mint family and well grounded in the ancient Ayurvedic Medicine system.  Krishna has the highest concentrations of adaptogenic triterpenoic acids which enhance the body's natural response to physical and emotional stress.  Rama has significant amounts as well.  Holy Basil is known for its ability to fight free radicals and promote a general sense of calm and well-being.

Tulsi is a powerful corticosteroid modulator, reducing stress from (adrenal) hormones moving about the body and assists in the normalization of cortisol making it an ideal aid in our hyper-stimulated digital culture.  It lowers stress in loud environments, and has been found to be useful in cases of social anxiety; an aid to those with sleep problems, forgetfulness and exhaustion.  According to the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, holy basil has antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties.

It is considered to be a prophylactic and known as a life-extending substance.  Research is also showing it to be a modifier in glucose regulation; it is anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and an immune system modulator.  This diuretic is considered quite safe to use.  It has had a long history of successfully treating fever.

Holy Basil contains ursolic acid, a carboxylic acid present in a wide variety of plants in the form of a free acid or an aglycone of triterpene saponines. Ursolic acid blocks the inflammatory enzymes cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, inhibits tumors (through the inhibition of MMP-2 and 9). It has been used to treat photoaged skin because it inhibits the appearance of wrinkles and age spots by restoring the skin’s collagen bundle structures and elasticity.  C. Cardenas, A. R. Quesada, and M. A. Medina, “Effects of ursolic acid on different steps of the angiogenic process,” Consume a cup of tulsi tea daily gives you the benefits of the phytonutrients in Holy basil.  These help make it is an excellent antibiotic, germicidal, fungicidal, and disinfectant agent and effective protector of our body from all sorts of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections curing internal and external disorders of the skin without any side effects.

Holy basil promotes eye health, is anti catarrh, it has been found to aid in normalizing blood pressure, it nourishes the cardiovascular system and inhibits platelet aggregation/ profound antiatherogenic!  Research by N. Singh, P. Verma, B. R. Pandey, M. Bhalla on Therapeutic Potential of Ocimum sanctum in Prevention and Treatment of Cancer and Exposure to Radiation shows it be an Anticancer and antioxidant offering important protection against radiation and chemotherapy poisoning and can heal damages from treatment induced damage.  It is also been used in recent study successfully to treat anxiety disorders.

Send me an email if you would like some Holy Basil and I will send you an invoice.
Ocimum Basilicum, Tulsi can be used fresh as you do other culinary basils.  Our Southeast Asian native has respectable amounts of vitamin A and C, calcium, zinc, iron and chlorophyll. It enhances metabolism.  When used as a mouth rinse it is beneficial for dental health, helps treat bad breath and because of its powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious properties make it a strong treatment for all gum disease according to J. Kukreja and V. Dodwad in Herbal Mouthwashes—A Gift of Nature.  I read that every Indiana home had this plant because of its usefulness.  I can understand why!

Both Rama and Krishna are pleasant to sip with woodsy, earthy notes; Rama being of a little mellower and cooler flavor.  Quilter’s Comfort’s Holy Basils are certified organic unless wild-crafted or stated locally sourced.

As we are each unique chemical bodies with different chemical response mechanisms, we always recommended that with any new herb, begin with small doses until you are sure that your body and mind are having a positive experience.  If you have questions, contact an Herbalist, Naturopath, or other wellness provider for advice and of course, it is very important for you to do your own research.  Remember, Holy Basil may modify glucose regulation.  I advocate using your local library and book store collections and reputable resources to know more.  You can find a lot of useful information about health and wellness on the National Institutes of Health’s Website.  Check this out - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4296439/

In Vibrational Medicine Holy Basil is a powerful bio-energetic field harmonizer restoring and balancing the subtle electromagnetic fields generated by the mind and body.  Tulsi is considered to be one of a handful of unique herbs that can balance the chakras (the vibrational energy centers of the body). It is beneficial during times of grief.  This plant is directly associated with Lakshmi, Hindu goddess of wealth, love, and prosperity.  Don’t be surprised if you experience some mental and emotional catharsis after sipping your cup of Tulsi. It is an intense healing plant. It seeks to facilitate clearing out old, stuck energy and emotions that are hindering your health and well-being and restoring systemic (mind, body, spirit) order.

Resources                                                                                                  If you are a gardener, you might consider growing your own Holy Basil.  It is cultivated as you would any other type of basil and does well in containers.  Wherever you plant your tulsi, it needs at least six hours of sunlight daily.  When you are planting in the ground, puts at least 15 inches between plants. Water as needed, but don’t over water.  Pinching growing points back will allow your plant to bush out.  As leaves mature, pick to encourage more leaf growth.  The herbal qualities and nutritional benefits are best when gathered for drying before  flowering.

"Tulsi is said to penetrate the deep tissues, dry tissue secretions and normalize kapha and vata. Daily consumption of tulsi is said to prevent disease, promote general health, wellbeing and longevity and assist in dealing with the stresses of daily life. Tulsi is also credited with giving luster to the complexion, sweetness to the voice and fostering beauty, intelligence, stamina and a calm emotional disposition.”  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4296439/

COUMERIC PEPPER

Why would your Mom, Kid, Auntie, Sister or Friend want Quilter’s Comfort’s Seasonings in their stocking or included as an add-in gift?

Why would L.A.O. seasonings be at the top of the prepared seasoning list?  First of all, everyone in the family can appreciate the fresh tastes and flavors imparted by these small batch blended certified organic teas or seasonings. But most important for some is that Quilter’s Comfort blends all seasonings without nightshades, an allergen know to cause, for some inflammation.

Some persons with arthritis have been medically advised to exclude nightshades which are found in tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and white potatoes (tobacco is a nightshade).

Some advised to avoid not just the obvious nightshades, but prepared foods that are processed with these foods.  Persons following these suggestions have reported very positive results including reduction and sometimes remission of arthritic swelling and pains.  Some have even felt relief from bursitis, gout, tennis elbow, lower-back paint, headaches, high bloom pressure and similar conditions.

No white potatoes!  No Tomatoes!  Egg Plant or Peppers!  What a kick off the path!  I would, I thought, I could, find a way around this.  I loved these foods!  They were an accent or main ingredient to daily dishes, not to mention, that I had spent decades cultivating heirloom varieties of both peppers and tomatoes!
Well, I went kicking and screaming, but You don’t have to.  And you can ease away from these foods.  Give your self this easy test to see if and how nightshades influence your body.  Consciously reduce the quantity you eat, even eliminate entire servings.  Read labels on prepackaged items, even shredded cheeses.  Use only corn starch.  Do this for a week.  If you want to, keep a journal; plan on eating a particular meal with nightshades making notes of how you feel.  Then a few days later prepare the exact meal only leaving out the nightshades.  Again, notice your body and write about all your observations, if any.

I no longer use nightshades nor knowingly consume products that include them in their composition.

I found that most commercial seasoning blends contained nightshades or other artificial substances my body did not like.  I, being a food explorer and lover, and someone who enjoys experiencing a variety of flavors and food traditions had to do something.

So Quilter’s Comfort developed a line of delicious, small batch blended seasonings reflecting a global palate to of flavor and free of nightshades.  You can enjoy all L.A.O. blends including Curry and Garam Masala and recently made available, Coumeric Pepper.

Exciting to the mouth, these spice compositions offer great taste experiences that your entire family of eaters, home chefs and friends can enjoy (professional chefs and dieticians too)!

Quilter’s Comfort’s L.A.O. seasonings are available in a sampler packet and glass shaker jar.  As always Bloomington, IN area folks, email request for invoice and  pick up in the Flowing Colors Studio.  Email is always the best way to reach me.

 Thank you,

I look forward to seeing your face soon and I look see you in time.  May we each in our own way spread a little Quilter’s Comfort cheer!
